Small Batch Gourmet
Made with misfit veggies
Small Batch Gourmet is a small business in Perth offering a range of hand-made sauces, relishes and condiments. I was engaged to redesign the brand identity and labels for 10 of their sauces. The chef behind the business Rosemary Gooch had a clear vision of how she wanted the brand to be perceived, with a few key elements to convey including: authenticity, hand-made, ethical, fun, sophisticated and a tongue-in-cheek approach (particularly in the product names). An important consideration was to avoid the cliched and juvenile branding common to many chilli sauces.
A strong graphic aesthetic has been designed for the brand, utilising a rich, earthy colour palette and bold typography. I created the tagline ‘Made with misfit veggies’ and an accompanying stamp that is repeated throughout the packaging and brand elements. This conveys to consumers (along with supporting text) the fact that Rosemary sources much of her ingredients from local farmers as seconds that the big supermarkets don’t accept for aesthetic reasons. This helps fight food waste and is an important value for the brand.
After the initial project I’ve gone on to design more sauces as well as photograph much of her product range. I couldn’t be happier with where the brand stands today, and Rosemary’s sales have had a big spike since the rebrand.
